Why are there so many self-proclaimed experts on social media telling us how to live our lives?

Updated: Apr 13, 2023

Prior to the advent of the internet and social media, we were unfamiliar with the concept of stress and did not actively seek out ways to alleviate it. When I reflect on my childhood, I recall spending the majority of my time playing outdoors, eating, studying, and sleeping. After completing your education, you might attend your preferred college or a different one, find employment, start a life, and eventually pass away when your time comes. While some may find this mundane, it is the reality of every individual's life, whether they are wealthy or work for a salary. We always have the option to choose a positive or negative path. Those who follow the negative path tend to derive negativity from everything they encounter, so there is little to discuss about them. As a result, modern influencers focus their efforts on individuals who maintain a positive outlook and strive to improve their lives daily.

Most people aspire to enhance their overall wellbeing by incorporating a little yoga or other exercise into their routine, as well as maintaining a positive mental attitude. While not everyone may agree with this notion, Baba Ramdev popularized yoga through television and the internet, enabling countless individuals to learn and practice it. Sadhguru emerged later, offering guidance on how to live a joyful life. There are also other notable figures, such as Swamy Mukundananda, Radhanath Swamy, Ravi Shankar, and others, who teach us the ethical and moral principles contained within our religious and historical texts. Unfortunately, due to the challenges posed by modern living, there are now a plethora of self-proclaimed gurus spreading nonsensical teachings.

Why are these teachings unnecessary? Let's delve into the matter.

  • There are numerous influencers who preach about the importance of regulating our sleep schedule, but given the diversity of generations, it's ideal to rise early, engage in physical activity, and kickstart our day in order to maintain high levels of energy. However, certain motivational speakers have taken it upon themselves to impose the idea that rising early is essential by citing examples of millionaires who follow this routine. It's crucial to understand that one's ability to amass wealth is not contingent on their sleep schedule, but rather on their ability to hone and refine their skills over time.

  • Numerous influencers are vocal about dietary restrictions and recommendations, such as classifying rice as an adversary. However, for generations, rice has been a staple food item that has been consumed without any detrimental effects. Although it might be advantageous to minimize our carbohydrate consumption, presenting rice as a strict "no" exhibits their limited understanding on the subject.

  • Doctors undergo years of rigorous training to acquire the necessary knowledge to treat the human body. As such, they play a critical role in our society. In contrast, many influencers offer medical advice despite lacking a fundamental understanding of the subject. For instance, some suggest inhaling steam as a remedy for COVID-19. However, if that were the case, why did we have to endure lengthy lockdowns and lose countless lives?

  • There are countless motivational speakers discussing stress management techniques. However, if we adhere to life's fundamental principles and appreciate the value of life, stress will not be a concern. Despite this, many speakers recommend ways to manage stress, even though they struggle to manage their own lives. I strongly believe that stress management has now become a multi-billion dollar industry.

Each person is unique, and life is a phenomenon that we all must encounter, understand, and appreciate in our own way. What may work wonders for one person may not necessarily work for others, and what one individual likes may be disliked by another. As such, making generalizations about such matters may not be the best approach. Instead, influencers should be cautious when recommending certain things and avoid promoting them as a panacea.
