Who are the True Heroes in Your Life?

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

As we age, we become aware of the cyclical nature of life and the fact that we will inevitably come full circle. During our childhood, our parents and siblings play a pivotal role in our lives, and we regard our parents, particularly our fathers, as superheroes capable of anything. Our early education in life is largely determined by our parents' treatment of us and our interactions with our siblings. However, as we grow older, our unique talents and passions become more evident, leading us to admire different role models depending on our interests. While some of us learn valuable lessons from these role models, others blindly follow them, losing sight of our own path in life and eventually missing out on important experiences. Though everyone's journey in life may differ, many of us will eventually come to appreciate the greatness of our parents, whether it happens early on, in middle age, or in old age.

Let's examine the key figures that have an impact on our lives and assess the extent of their influence.

  1. Sports personalities : When we are in school or college, most of us have a keen interest in sports, particularly Football and Cricket. We aspire to imitate our sporting heroes and this interest can drive us to pursue careers as athletes. However, only a small minority of fans, about 1%, actually become professional players, while the majority, around 99%, are simply spectators. Some fans may have a genuine love for the sport and derive enjoyment from watching it, but for others it can become a source of anger and frustration, especially when their favorite team or player loses. Unfortunately, this can even lead to negative behaviors like betting, which can result in financial loss.

  2. Film actors : Movies are a universal source of entertainment. People often view film actors as role models and their actions and lifestyles can shape the attitudes and behaviors of their fans. Actors in the film industry often set fashion and style trends, inspiring their followers to copy their clothing, hairstyles, and makeup. They can use their fame to bring attention to important social issues and promote causes they are passionate about, inspiring others to make a positive impact. However, excessive idolization of actors can lead to problems, causing friction between individuals and resulting in financial difficulties.

  3. Politicians : Politicians are responsible for crafting and enacting laws and policies that have a significant impact on people's lives, including in areas such as health care, education, taxation, and social issues. They play a crucial role in the economy, by creating job opportunities, driving economic growth, and addressing income disparities through their policies and decisions. While politicians have the power to bring attention to important social issues and promote positive change, in many countries, they engage in corrupt practices which can have dire consequences, including loss of life and livelihoods.

  4. Billionaires : Billionaires often own and run successful businesses that generate employment and fuel economic growth. Their actions and decisions can have far-reaching impacts on their employees and the communities in which they operate. Many of these wealthy individuals use their resources to make a positive difference in society through philanthropy, supporting initiatives in fields such as education and health care. While it is natural to admire and strive to emulate their success, blindly following their lifestyles and pursuit of wealth can lead to stress and anxiety, and even cause individuals to make poor choices and become financially worse off.

  5. Modern Influencers : Modern influencers are individuals with a significant following on social media, who wield influence over their audience. This includes social media personalities, celebrity influencers, content creators, and entrepreneurs. Following honest and genuine influencers can be beneficial, but if they are not trustworthy, it can cause more harm than good.

Before we start idolizing someone, it is important to assess how much time and money we invest in them and how much of our valuable life we might be wasting. It is crucial to remember that these influencers do not share their earnings with us and may not be available when we need them. Therefore, it is better to focus on how we can improve our lives by pursuing our passions. We will eventually realize who truly supports us in life, but this realization may come at the cost of precious time and energy. Unfortunately, by the time we understand this, we may have already lost a substantial portion of our life. As we get married and start a family, many of us begin to appreciate the hard work and sacrifices of our parents and recognize them as true superheroes. Some individuals are fortunate enough to realize this while their parents are still alive, while others may regret not recognizing it sooner.
