What is Spirituality?

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

What is spirituality? The prevalent belief is that in order to be spiritual, one must be a member of a specific religious institution. Although spirituality might mean different things to different individuals, to the best of my knowledge, it is a way of life.

For instance, we work hard in school, achieve high grades, launch our own company, and make millions of dollars. We must maintain our composure, work ethic, mental fortitude, and stress management awareness during this time. We won't succeed in achieving our objectives if we don't undertake any of these. What imparts all of these lessons to us? Do we use textbooks, our curriculum, or something else? Spirituality is the only solution to all of the aforementioned queries. Whatever we accomplish will have value, and our life will serve as a positive example for others, if we are spiritual and recognise that we only have a finite amount of time on this earth and, more significantly, that we are nothing in comparison to the cosmos.

The living Encyclopedia, Sadhguru, tells a tale involving Bullock and a bird. A bird aspires to fly to great heights and rest on a mountain, but it lacks the necessary confidence or power. A bullock suggests that the bird should eat its feces, claiming that it will make flying easy. The bird starts eating it and also begins to imitate flight and soon finds itself on top of a mountain, admiring the view. Unfortunately, a hunter kills the bird, causing its death. The morale of the story is that even though bull-shit can take us to great heights, there is no assurance that we will live there forever. There is no other solution to all of life's problems than spirituality. When we recognise the importance of life, we treat it differently and it responds to us in the best way it can.

I insist that spirituality be taught in schools so that future generations will not invite pandemics like the coronavirus and will also enjoy stronger lives than ever. Spirituality teaches us valuable lessons about living a fulfilling life and strengthening our mental resilience It relieves our heads of unnecessary stress and teaches us to strike a balance between real happiness and financial satisfaction.

How can one then be spiritual?

To lead a spiritual life in the contemporary environment, abide by these timeless principles.

  • First, learn how to meditate. You can practise many common meditation techniques on a regular basis at a specific time, preferably in the morning or evening with an empty stomach.

  • Consider how you responded to circumstances over the last week. Sit in a quiet area, make an effort to control your emotions, and begin calmly examining the situations.

  • Start acting with enthusiasm instead of expecting results. This will put things right between you and the other people you often engage with

  • Focusing on the things in life that one is grateful for can help to cultivate a sense of inner peace and contentment

  • Helping others can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment, and can be a way to connect with one's spiritual beliefs

  • Realising that death is inevitable and that we only have a finite amount of time here will fundamentally alter how you think about life and interact with other people.
