How can you enhance your digestion?

Updated: Dec 17, 2022

What is the function of our digestive system? Our digestive system breaks down the food and liquid we consume into smaller pieces so that they can be easily absorbed and distributed to the necessary body regions as nutrients.

The majority of people believe that the stomach serves as a second brain. Half of life's issues can be solved if our food is correctly digested; otherwise, we start experiencing stomach aches, which divert our attention from our work and significantly affect our day-to-day lives.

Here are some important Tips for better digestion:

  1. Balanced diet - In the present world, most people are under the impression that if we don’t eat then our weight will reduce and we can stay healthy. This may be true for some people but in most of the cases this will result in health issues because of poor nutrition. We should take one meal a day which is cooked, contains all nutrients and can be digested easily.

  2. Water - water should not be consumed throughout the meal. Water should not be consumed immediately following a meal. After a couple of hours of eating, we should not drink water. The reason for this is because our stomach creates the necessary acids to digest food, but drinking water during and immediately after meals dilutes these acids, causing harm to the digestive system. This causes acidity, chest burn, and other unease in the body, as well as a feeling of inactivity or drowsiness. So, how should you drink water properly?

    • Drink water for at least 30 minutes before your meal. This will make you hungry, and the meal is tasty and easy to digest.

    • Water should not be consumed during the meal or for at least 2 hours afterward. Water will wash out the acids and clean your stomach if you start drinking it after 2 hours after eating.

    • After 2 hours, don't drink too much. Start sipping carefully, one glass at a time, for half an hour.

During and after meals, some people may feel thirsty. It's really common because you didn't drink enough water. Drink two glasses of water right after you get up in the morning to avoid this, as well as for improved digestion. This will fill your stomach with water and prevent you from being thirsty during the meal. As a result, the greatest strategy to help your digestion is to drink water properly.

3. Fruits: Fruits are an important part of our diet since they promote digestion. We can improve our digestion and keep a healthy stomach by eating the right fruit in the proper way. We must also select watery fruits that easily convert to water and have fewer calories.

  • The first fruit on the list is papaya, which is one of the best for digestion but is often neglected. Papaya can be consumed on a daily basis to aid digestion, avoid inflammatory disorders, and soothe the stomach. Papaya is good for your skin and dissolves fast in the bloodstream, so it won't spike your blood sugar like other fruits. However, picking the appropriate papaya is critical, because unripe papaya can create complications for pregnant women and even during their periods.

  • For a healthier, faster, and easier digestion, watermelon, honey dew, and all other melon fruits should be taken.

4. Asafoetida: According to Ayurvedic studies, the best medicine for indigestion is asafoetida. It has a strong odor, but it has been used for thousands of years to aid in the recovery of patients suffering from digestive disorders. If we are eating non-vegetarian food, we should definitely use Asafoetida. Add a sprinkle or two to the hot oil to remove the pungent odour while also providing digestive benefits to non-vegetarian dishes.

5. Physical Activity: Overweight is the main cause for digestive issues. Eating healthy is not the only way but we need to do that with a healthy exercise like Yoga, walking or Running. Aerobic exercises at home will make us fit and healthy.

6. Stress management: We need to keep stress away if we want to keep our digestive system healthy. Stress levels increase the risk of heart attacks. Start practicing Pranayama and Meditation immediately if you want to keep your heart healthy.
